What is Asbestos?

Here at Edmonton Asbestos we often get asked: What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is the general name given to a wide variety of fibrous minerals found within rock formations. They are incredibly strong, durable and non-combustible. At first glance this would make them seem ideal for construction purposes, however, the dust released from Asbestos is lethal and known to cause cancer, specifically in the mesothelial tissue of your lungs. This form of cancer is known as Mesothelioma. Due to Asbestos being so durable, when it is absorbed into the lungs it doesn’t break down and creates small splinters or cuts inside the lungs. As the the cut heals, the splinters become locked into the lung tissue. This lung tissue then becomes inflamed and can form cancer cells around the Asbestos.
